TIRE CHANGES

A roadside tire change depends on a usable spare, the right wheel tools, and enough safe space to work.

Move out of danger

If the car is in traffic or an unsafe shoulder, follow official instructions and stay clear of moving vehicles. A tow to a tire shop may be safer than changing a wheel at the roadside.

Check what the car carries

Tell the operator whether you have a spare, wheel-lock key, and accessible lug nuts. A damaged rim or missing lock key may prevent a roadside change.

Agree on a backup

Ask for the tire-service price and a separate tow quote if the spare cannot be fitted. A temporary spare is not a full replacement; follow the vehicle manufacturer’s speed and distance guidance.

Check the working space

A spare-tire change needs enough room away from moving traffic. If the flat is beside a busy Queens or Long Island travel lane, move to safety and ask whether a tow is the better option.

Have the spare ready

Tell the operator whether the spare is in the vehicle and whether the wheel-lock key is available. Otherwise, discuss a tow to a tire shop.

Have these details ready

  • Safe work area
  • Usable spare and tools
  • Wheel-lock key
  • Tow option if needed
